Uma-Mahesvara

The two Uma¬Mahesvara images acquired on the 6th August 1975 were recovered from debris in the compound of the present Bhavani-Sankar temple of Bhubaneswar sometime back. They were perhaps parts of the old temple partially visible under ground in the same premises. Of the two figures, one is some how in good state of preservation and the other is damaged from the middle and the upper part is missing. Stylistically both the figures can be placed to the 9th century A.D. Except in minor details of the iconographic features they were carved in the conventional posture of Uma Mahesvara images found elsewhere in Odisha.

In this variety of Uma-Mahesvara figures, Uma facing Mahesvara is found seated on his lap. She holds a mirror in her left hand and encircles the neck of her lord with the right. The fourarmed Mahesvara embraces her with one of his hands and holds a trident in another. In the other two hands he shows Abhaya mudra and a Japamala. Generally bull and a lion are found below the pedestal. Several early, specimens of Uma-Mahesvara are also noticed at Bhubaneswar.

Leaving aside the group of sculptures we have referred to above a number of Puranic panels displayed in the galleries should not be missed by the visitor during his itinerary. They include panels showing Kaliyadalana, Vastraharana of the Bhagavata Purana and an episode from the Kumara Sambhava of Kalidasa relating to the birth of Skanda Kartikeya. The information kiosk in this section can be useful for the visitors for wide ranging information about the rich Archaeological remains of Odisha. Virtually the archeological specimens represent the vast mass of archeological treasures of the State.
