Copper Plate Grants

This copper plate recovered from the village Jayarampur in Balasore district is an important acquisition of the Section. The prasasti reveals the glorious achievement of one Gopachandra in whose reign the grant was issued by Mahasamanta Maharaj Achyuta. It contains important geographical data including the topographical position of the place from where the grant was issued. The village Svetavalika was granted for the installation of worship of the Buddhist deity Bhagavat-Arya Avalokiteswar by the Arya Samgha of the Budhist group. It further reveals that there was full co-operation among the Budhists and the Brahmins during the 5th and 6” centuries A.D. for which Paramamaheswar, Maharajadhiraja Gopachandra allowed his subordinate chief Achyuta to grant a village in his territory in favour of the Arya Samgha and the Buddhist deity Avalokiteswar.
