Coins similar to that of copper plates throw considerable light on the ancient and mediaeval history of Odisha. The coins so far discovered represent only a few royal dynasties of Odisha. In additions a new variety of punch- marked coins of pre-Maurya and Mauryan age, Kushana and Puri Kushana coins, Gupta gold coins, coins of Sri Nanda Kalachuri and Yadava gold coins, Ganga gold fanams and silver coins of some Mughal emperors have been discovered.

The Odisha State Museum since its inception has become a treasure house of Numismatic findings, some representing the all Indian coin types whereas others highlighting the local ruling dynasties. A few important hoards of the coins are mentioned in brief. For the time being we have not displayed original coins in the Gallery for the public. Plaster cast models of a few important coins can be seen in the Epigraphy gallery.
