Lacquer work

Lac, a gum collected from the Kusum trees add in the hue to the bamboo baskets which result in fashionable lacquer baskets and boxes. Beautiful motifs of birds, foliage are painted over the boxes and at times mirrors are also studed to the surface to make them more colourful and attractive. The lacquer boxes are mostly used to store valuables and toilet goods in rural homes. The ordinary lacquer toys gain a high finish and provide a queer look with colourful lac coatings. We have a large variety of these on display in the gallery. Nawrangapur in the district of Koraput abounds in such guilds which produce these crafts.
